The Rebel Óg Monster Blitz Go Games Programme was officially launched in Blackrock Castle recently by Cork GAA Games Manager Kevin O’Callaghan, Child Initiatives Co ordinator GDA Colm Crowley and players from participating clubs. The Monster Blitze will see over 8,000 children participate in hurling and football games every month right up to October 2016 across the county. Now in its fourth year, the programme has gone from strength to strength with ever increasing numbers participating in over 300 blitzes.
This is one serious project with up to 70 teams expected at some venues during the 2016 season. Coaches have been attending workshops around the county in the past 4 weeks to help prepare for the season. The project provides boys with a regular and consistent programme of games that are age appropriate and designed to foster a love for Gaelic games through a positive experience at beginner level to playing our games.
Great credit is due to the Games Development Administrators who run the blitzes every Saturday with every boy getting the chance to play 3 games over a compact two hour period. The blitzes cater for u7, u8, u9 and u10 club players. The blitzes provide an ideal platform for young boys to develop the basic skills of the game with no scores being kept and small sided games (u8 play 7 a side while u9/10 play 9 a side) mean boys get more touches of the ball than in the 15 a side game we are more familiar with.
This year, boys playing at u10 level will graduate to mini leagues from July onwards. The u7’s will then fill there place in our Monster Blitz Programme.
It is not only players who are being developed. Clubs are also required to bring a young referee to each blitz. This is an ideal platform to introduce young people to refereeing with very little pressure coming from either players or coaches, with the GDA on hand to support them also.
Blitzes occur every Saturday and, should you be nearby, it is well worth dropping in to see the stars of the future learning valuable skills.
