East GDA News

A chara,
As we approach the end of 2016 I just want to take this time to say thank you to everyone for your help throughout the year. As Games Development Administrator for East Cork, I interact with a lot of clubs, schools, mentors, coaches, parents, committee members etc on a daily basis and it has been a pleasure to do so. On all occasions everyone has pulled together in the spirit of co operation to enhance the playing experience of our young players and make them more enjoyable, while at the same time teaching them the skills of our national games.

The list is long but includes committee members, mentors, coaches, parents, groundsmen cutting grass lining fields & putting out goalposts, to people making tea sandwiches etc, people cleaning jerseys, those who provide transport, all our referees, the teachers in our local schools, people opening halls, gyms & pitches, the different sponsors of the clubs, all our first aid staff, all the local media who take photos and publish reports of all the work being done, to all the officers of Rebel Og who work tirelessly providing games and fixtures during the year and of course my fellow GDA’s in Cork. My job has been made easier because of all your work so “thank you” to you all.

2017 will be on us soon enough and before that starts I would ask that each club secretary please send me the following information so I can update my records. It is vital for me to have this information, as your club’s “Coaching Officer” is my main point of contact in your club.

In the year gone by there were some activities that I felt I should mention briefly and I would like to thank everyone for their assistance in running these activities during 2016. The commitment shown by the Boards and clubs has been fantastic and bodes well for the future of Hurling & Football in East Cork. The following is just a small portion of the work clubs are doing in East Cork.

Blitzs were held in Killeagh, Aghada, Carrigtwohill & Youghal Sat Mornings at U6, U7, U8,U9 & U10 level with approx 6,000 participants from all East Cork Clubs. Thank you to the host venues for their help in providing these venues, teas, snacks, parking assistance etc without them it would be hard to provide these blitzes weekly.

Cul Camps
All East Cork Clubs held Cul Camps and numbers were up approx 25% in East Cork, over all approx 18,000 children attended Cul Camps in Cork County. I got to visit these camps and I was delighted at the way each club ran their camps with plenty of help and of course plenty of young participants, thank you for inviting me along.

Post Primary Schools
Our PPS 1st year blitzes were very successful in hurling & Football this year with East Cork schools taking part, added in to our TY courses in each school the relationship between the GDA and Post Primary Schools worked really well with approx 360 Transition Year pupils in East Cork doing the TY Course by year end. I must say a big thank you to all the Principles, teachers, staff and pupils.

Primary Schools
Coaching has taken place in Primary nearly all schools in East Cork with great interaction between Schools and Clubs to provide coaching to pupils. A big thank you to all the coaches who went in to their local schools, to all teachers, classroom assistants ,club officers, parents and committee members who took part its a huge ask every year but well done to you all.

We ran 16 workshops with over 850 coaches attending during 2016. We are delighted to see that clubs are attending these workshops in large numbers and because of this we can continue to provide these workshops. Again I must also thank the clubs who invited me in to provide workshops to their coaches in smaller numbers.

Coach Education
With new structures implemented our courses are now of a higher standard then before with new coaches being encouraged to work in their local clubs before Certification is granted. Scaith Na Scoil and Clubs have welcomed these new structures. Cork have run 38 Foundation Courses (approx 950 attended) 10 Award 1 Courses (approx 250 attended) 1 Award 2 Course (approx 30 attended). All courses run in 2016 have been issued Certs and the backlog of Certs for 2015 & 2014 are being cleared on an ongoing basis. If your club wishes to run a course please contact me and we can arrange something for your club.

On top of our regular Squad work with our successful underage teams at division and county level we implemented a new summer coaching program in East Cork/Cork City combined, we held them in Carrigtwohill and Mayfield for U13 Football & Hurling with over 350 players taking part on an ongoing basis with GDA Sean Crowley from the City and myself from the East coordinating and coaching at all these sessions throughout the summer months on Mon and Wed evenings. A big thank you to Carrigtwohill and Mayfield for providing us withtheir pitches. I wish to thank all squad mentors and coaches from East Cork who gave up lots of their free time to assist these teams during the year. Their help, advice, knowledge and coaching skills is invaluable and I am grateful to each and every one of them for the huge effort they put in each year.

With over 138,502 visitors to our 200 plus page website www.rebelogcoaching.com since its launch at the start of the year we have made great use of this central area for all clubs with automated digital facilities for clubs to register online for Coach Education Courses, Workshops, Monster Blitzes weekly,Bench marking, U10 Leagues, Schools Skills Competitions, Munster team competitions etc. We have Video Galleries and Photo Galleries with more then 3,000 photos of club activities etc taking place through the year.

To the clubs who have undertaken Benchmarking in 2016 I say well done, its a valuable asset to the club going forward to be able to track progress and see where improvements can be made the following year. To those clubs who have achieved their targets I say well done and to clubs who are not quite there yet, stay positive, as the work is being carried out and its only a matter of time.

Thanks to all the clubs below who applied for benchmarking this year. Special thanks must go to the coaching officers in each club who carried out a huge workload for their club during the past year. There’s fantastic work being done. Results will be going up on the Rebel Óg website in the next couple of days. Any club not mentioned below hasn’t yet submitted an application.
