After many months of Football in the Post Primary Schools of East Cork on Friday 24th May in Castlemartyr we we held our East Cork Post Primary Schools Football Final for the James Colbert Memorial Cup between Pobalscoil na Tríonóide, Youghal and Midleton CBS.
It was great to see both schools reach the final after playing in their respective groups. In our very first game of this tournament on the 10th December, Midleton CBS traveled to Youghal to play Pobalscoil in a close game with Midleton CBS edging the win on the day on a scoreline of 2-09 to 2-06. Now six months later with all the six schools playing in their groups and semi finals completed we were down to the last 2 schools.

James Colbert Cup Final winners 2019
This tournament was put in place to cater for 1st yr and 2nd yr students who were not playing football already on their school team. Primarily this was aimed at the second and third teams in the school.
The Imokilly Board were approached by East Cork GDA Shane Supple looking for a Cup to use for this competition. The Board agreed that they could allow the James Colbert Memorial Cup be used for this Competition and help support football within the Imokilly Division. Imokilly Chairman, Donal O’Keeffe was on hand to present the cup to the winners on the day.
Cork GAA Board Coaching Officer Ronan Dwane was on hand to present both schools with Medals
The Shield, sponsored by Rebel Og was presented to the winners by footballer and All Ireland winning manager from Aghada, Conor Counihan.
A big well done to all schools for taking part. It is good to see the schools involved in this tournament allowing for more football to be played in the schools for the 2nd and 3rd teams.
Well done to Midleton CBS winners of the 2019 James Colbert Cup and Glanmire Community College winners of the tournament Shield.
The James Colbert Memorial Cup for Post Primary Schools in East Cork Football Final was filled with great scores and good football right down to the last minute.
Well done to both schools for such a sporting and high scoring game and to referee James Daly who kept the game flowing throughout.
We must also take this time to thank the clubs who provided pitches for the different games and to Castlemartyr GAA club for having the pitch in perfect order for this match.
From the very start once ref James Daly threw in the ball this game was end to end football with Pobalscoil registering the first score. Midleton CBS from the kick out went straight up the field and replied with a point from play, and this was to be the trend for the first half with both sides giving it all. At the break Midleton had gone into a lead with a scoreline of 4-7 to Pobalscoil’s 4-2.
The second half resumed with Midleton holding the lead going into the final quarter but Pobalscoil made some changes on the field of play and introduced some fresh legs and they started to draw back the lead. For the last 10 minutes Pobalscoil were on top and going into injury time there was only a kick of a ball between the sides. With time almost up Pobalscoil won a free and pointed leaving only 2 points between the sides which Midleton CBS held onto and when the final whistle blew the final score was Midleont CBS 7-13 to Pobalscoils 6-14.
