The roles and responsibilities of GDAs are currently under revision and clubs will be updated in the near future following approval from county board and Munster Council.

(ii) Club Visits
All GDAs are currently contacting clubs regarding upcoming visits to assist in planning their coaching programme to achieve the Rebel Og Coaching Benchmarks for 2016. In the last week West Cork GDA James McCarthy has held club planning nights in Macroom, Canovee, Iveleary and Gabriel Rangers. Meetings have also been planned with Ballingeary, Kilmichael, Clondrohid, Ilen Rovers, Muintir Bhaire, Diarmuid O Mathunas.

Sean Crowley is now based in the Northern area of Cork city and has held club visits in Mayfield, St Vincent’s, Brian Dillon’s, Glenville, and Na Piarsaigh recently and plans to visit the following in the next week or so: Watergrasshill, Blarney, Ballincollig, Glen Rovers, St Nicks, Whitechurch and Carraig Na Bhfear.

North Cork GDA Pat Spratt has planned visits with the following clubs across January / February: Newtownshandrum, Ballyhea, Clyda Rovers, Croke Rovers, Mallow, Killavullen, Ballyclough, Duarigle Gaels, Ballygiblin, Mitchelstown, Milford and Knocknagree.

East Cork GDA Shane Supple has held club visits / meetings with Fermoy, Youghal, Cobh, Carrigtwohill and Fr O Neill’s. He plans to meet Erins Own, Glanmire, Killeagh, Castlelyons, St Ita’s, St Colman’s, Cloyne and Aghada, over the next few weeks.

Southside GDA Paudie O’Brien has held club planning meetings with Ballygarvan, Carrigaline, Shamrocks, Ballinora and Ballinhassig, with further meetings arranged with Passage, Bishopstown, St Finbarr’s, Nemo Rangers, Douglas, Blackrock and St Michaels in the next few weeks.

(iii) Physical Development Programme Workshops for Coaches of Club Teenage Players CONTINUE IN THE MARDYKE THIS MONDAY

Over fifty coaches attended the first of the series of physical development workshops in Mallow on last Monday night. This physical development programme was designed for development squad panels by Jeff Gomez of the Mardyke Arena and was implemented by sixteen 4th year students from the Physical Education Degree course in UCC, under the supervision of Dr. Wesley O’Brien in November and December.

It is now being extended to club players through a series of workshops delivered by Dr. O’Brien, with the assistance of a number of his students. All club coaches are welcome and will be provided with the content and guidance on implementing the six-week programme. Content will be emailed to participants subsequently.

Mon Feb 1st in Clonakilty Sports Centre – Convent Hall @8pm

It is planned to follow this programme with a series of workshops on injury prevention in March as the playing season gets into full swing and coaches will be integrating their physical development into field sessions.
(iv) Upcoming Camogie / Hurling Workshop in Mallow on Tuesday, February 2nd
Munster Camogie will host a skills coaching workshop on Tuesday February 2nd, from 7 to 8.30pm at Mallow GAA Complex. Content will be delivered by: Paudie Butler, Fiona O’ Driscoll, Esther O’ Leary, Ollie Troy, St John Cremen and Rob Lotty. The workshop is open to all and content is suitable to coaches of both boys and girls.
Fee: €10 to reserve places.

(v) Open Call to Regional Trials – U15 & U16 Football & Hurling
Many thanks to all clubs that submitted names of U15 and U16 players for trials. Names were received from the following clubs: Aghabullogue, Ahan Gaels, Ballyclough, Ballyhooly, Bantry Blues, Castletownroche, Kilmacabea, Clondrohid, Courcey Rovers, Erins Own, Granard Gaels, Ilen Rovers, Kilbrittain, Killeagh, Kilmichael, Kinsale, Lisgoold, Midleton, Muintir Bhaire Og, Naomh Aban, St Vincent’s, Tadhg MacCarthaigh, Tracton, Watergrasshill, Whites Cross and Youghal.

Trials will now follow, organised by Sean Crowley in hurling  and James McCarthy in football

(vii) Two GAA Coaching Vacancies – CE Scheme & Gaeltacht Schemes

Cork GAA CE Scheme have a coaching position available for suitably qualified applicants. Please see the link below for further details.

A part time coaching position is available in the Muskerry Gaeltacht area of Cork. This is a paid position for 15 hours per week. The applicant must be able to deliver sessions through Irish. CV’s or further queries to


(viii) Nursery Workshop for Coaches of 4-7 year olds LAST SATURDAY

Last Saturday over eighty coaches turned up in Nemo for the Nursery Workshop organised by GDA Colm Crowley, for coaches of the 4-7 year olds.

  • Kevin Murray (St Finbarr’s and former Cork Senior Hurler) of Coaching Movement started the session with a practical demonstration, using different equipment to encourage children to move better. Kevin has a fantastic resource on Facebook called “Coaching Movement” which has videos and information on such exercises
  • Wesley O’Brien (UCC, Carrigaline and Cork Camogie Coach) then added the theory behind the importance of improving the Fundamental Movement skills of children and also showed examples of how to implement this in a practical environment.
  • Stephen Behan (Clontarf GAA GPO, Dublin) finished off with a more games/ball based exercises and gave an example of how to run an effective club nursery program.

(ix) Care & Repair of Hurley Course

A Care & Repair of Hurley Course has recently started in Colaiste an Spiorad Naomh, Bishopstown, under the supervision of John O’Sullivan, Ballinhassig. The course will run over seven hours across four Fridays. Eleven transition year students from fur clubs will complete the course and we are grateful to John for his role in organisation and delivery of the course.


(x) Rebel Og Academy – Inter –Regional Competitions

With the inter-regional competitions coming to a conclusion over the next few weeks, ahead of the start of the club season there are further games this weekend at the ‘Old Mon Fields’ in St. Vincent’s. These are the provisional fixtures for the weekend subject to weather. Contact hurling squads coordinator with any queries.
